Tetra-Valency of  Carbon

Introduction:
1) Kekule in 1865 proved that Valency of Carbon is 4 in mo0st of the compounds.
2)This concept was established according to the rules of electronic configuration set by Hund's Rule .

Electronic configuration of carbon in ground state may be given as :


Electronic configuration of carbon in Excited state may be given as:
             
From the above  electronic configuration it is obvious that due to promotion of the electron from 2s orbital to 2pz orbital unpaired electrons becomes 4 and carbon becomes Tetra- Valent .

3) Kekule also established chain structures and ring structures of many carbon compounds due to this phenomenon.
